The norm
April 6, 2024
20 young artists explore the problem of the contemporary norm: articulated, questioned, prescribed, and recognized as a prevailing simulacrum. Often transformed into an "illusion of normality" that one creates or maintains, painfully and salutarily. For each of the artistis, the notion of norm becomes a question, a theme, a challenge, a disease or a right.

I was born in the town of Kaluga. From early childhood I was very sensitive. At the age of 6, when I started school, my father began beating my mother every weekend, this lasted for more than 5 years. When I was 12, I already had 3 suicide attempts. Both parents were alcoholics, my mother was constantly disappearing and could not get out of her drinking bout for weeks. At this time, my father said that I was the same scum as my mother and that he would kill her. At the age of 14, I began to deliberately hurt myself. Selfharm helped me not to experience that frantic pain inside and transfer it at least to my body. As soon as this stopped working, I started drinking alcohol.
But, after a while, the pain began to seep through that. At the age of 15, I tried drugs for the first time and in the same year I already had 2 overdoses. I took it for more than 5 years. The tendency towards the most destructive behavior, feelings of inferiority and uncontrollable aggression began to manifest themselves strongly at the age of 16 and I decided to go to a psychiatrist for the first time.
They only told me “you will grow up and it will pass!” But it didn't work. The eternal feeling of emptiness, emotional instability, and fear of abandonment consumed me even more, and drugs were the only possible way to escape the pain.
At the age of 19, I left home and continued my search for what was wrong with me.
3 months ago I was diagnosed with BPD (borderline personality disorder).
Now my norm is 4 tablets a day, DBT groups on Wednesdays, 1 session with a personal therapist per week and observation by a psychiatrist.
I also have to write down by hand every day my feelings about what is happening in life. This helps me maintain a resourceful state between sessions.

Adaptation
Adaptation, as the most ancient human ability, presupposes the unity of the social and biological organism, attention to the body and the context.
In conditions of external political crises, we have to admit that we have alteady lost and master the strategy of adaptation as a strategy for dealing with pain. People quickly learn to adapt to changing circumstances, but the language of body and space usually turns out to be less flexible and more honest.
